We generally recommend nibral specifically when a prop is considered “over square,” which is when the pitch is greater than the diameter. In some cases, companies who work exclusively with nibral do not stamp the material on the hub of the propeller, and we find out when our prop-tech gets his hands on the project. It’s not always visible when a propeller is pulled off a boat and has growth or electrolysis, but once our prop-tech gets them all cleaned up, markings become visible. Most of the time, a nibral boat propeller will be stamped somewhere on the hub indicating the metal type. In accordance with those features, nibral does generally cost more and take longer to work on in the machine or repair shop. Nibral has a tensile strength of 90,000 PSI, and a yield strength of 37,000. To get technical, Manganese Bronze Alloy has a tensile strength of 65,000 PSI, and yield strength of 25,000 PSI. While the two look very much alike, nibral is considered harder, stronger and more corrosion resistant. Prop Scan is a “tool” that we use to ensure the accuracy of each and every repair. All propellers are scanned using Prop Scan. Once approval has been received, the propeller repair will begin. If a propeller does not pass, it goes back into the system again as we are proud of our work and want to ensure that it is a quality repair. We check each and every propeller/skeg for quality. The next stage for both types of propellers is Quality Inspection. Stainless steel propellers are then checked one last time for balance. Aluminum propellers are then readied for paint and stainless steel propellers are brought to a “satin finish” and the cup is checked to ensure that the cup that the propeller arrived with is the same as when the propeller leaves. The blades are then matched and balance is checked. Pitch is checked again to ensure that the pitch was not compromised during the welding stage. Then the welded areas are ground so that the propeller blade is smooth. Next the propeller moves on to the welding area where the propeller is welded to add material for any missing “chunks or nicks”. We then straighten the blades on the correct pitch block for the pitch of the propeller.
